Railroad Pilings Resurrected in Cedar Key

Long buried railroad pilings that were causing injuries to bathers at Cedar Key City Beach have been removed.

Protruding piling surfaces provided a surface for oyster growth and subsequent cuts on bathers` feet. The pilings are cedar and pine, well preserved after years submerged in sea water.

Approximately eighteen pilings about ten feet in length were removed with the help of a back hoe. Four of the cedar logs will be sawed into planks for restoration of an old boat by local banker and City Commissioner Heath Davis. The pilings are thought to be from the long-defunct railroad that ran from near Jacksonville, Florida to Cedar Key. The rail road served central Florida from the 1860`s until the 1930`s.

A few pilings remain in place protruding from the water where the rail line crossed from the area known as Kiss-Me-Quick to Hungry Bend.
