3rd Week Of May, 2012 Fishing Report

The water temperature has warmed up to 80 degrees F and the fishing continues to be real warm too. The speckled trout are still feeding over the shallow flats, close in next to Cedar Key and approximately 2 miles out past Snake Key in an area called Chris Knox. That`s the name of a couple of sand bars with grassy patches around them.

Mackerel and Trout school over the 3ft to 4ft bottom out there and eat all the small critters living in the grass beds. I had members of the Villages retirement community out with me this past week and we had a lot of action. Mostly mackerel and speckled trout.

There is a picture of Lorie with a big mackerel and Capt. Dennis with a whopper trout at 20.5in. He caught that trout on an all white jig with a quarter ounce lead head.

We also caught 3 porgies and a robin fish and a remora. I mention these fishes to describe to you that you just never know what will strike your bait. Cedar Key is on the edge of the ocean and many different species feed among the mangrove islands when the tide is high enough.
