Temporary Closure at Shell Mound

The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge announces improvements at Shell Mound Unit of the Refuge. The site sits at the end of County Road 326 adjacent to the Shell Mound County Campground.

Manager John Kasbohm reports that the fishing pier, both foot trails and the road will be closed for improvements to the parking area and road for approximately two weeks, beginning Monday September 28 until completed. Trucks and other heavy equipment will be operating in the area. Consequently, for safety purposes, the area will more than likely remain closed until the construction is completed.

"If possible, we will open on weekends for our visitors, but this will depend on our progress spreading tons of lime rock and securing heavy equipment for safety," said Kasbohm.

Call the Refuge, 493-0238, ext. 223 on Friday afternoon to hear if the Shell Mound area will be open for the weekend.
