A Tribute To Nicholas Glasson

By Esta Johnston

(Editor`s Note: A memorial gathering to remember Nicholas Glasson will take place at The Island Hotel Thursday, January 29 at 2:30 p.m.)

I am so saddened by hearing of Nick`s death. (Here are) some pics that I have taken over the years, and a note that I sent to my kids. He was a very unique individual and I have known him since he first moved to CK so many years ago.

These are some images I have of Nick. He was just about the last of the era of uncompromised Cedar Key characters, the unofficial Chamber of Info to anyone who strolled past his outdoor office.

The very faint water color is one I did of Nick from life, when I was selling my tees behind my building one afternoon. He did not know I was doing it. He was sick then and trying to warm up in the sun, napping a bit. I never did finish the painting.

The last picture I took was in November. I barged in on him trying to take some snaps so I could work on that painting. He was so sick then, but I never heard him complain.

His hearty HarHarHar laugh still rings in my ears. A man who took life as it came. I don`t ever remember hearing him complain about anything. A fine silversmith, a gentle peaceful individual, a lover of good jazz and books, and his yard a veritable garden of exotics plants. He lived his life with an inner joy that few storms could dim. Nick - we are going to miss you - so much
