Things to consider: · It is estimated that between 50-75% of waste can be recycled. So if you commit to recycling now that curbside recycling is available you will have much less trash each week. · The price you pay each month will be less if you have less trash and recycle more (although the differential is not as large as we had hoped and a smaller 20 gal container was deleted from our choices as compromises were made to finalize the contract) · Your choice of container size will also obviously depend on how big your household is and the choices your family makes when shopping. · And, just FYI a regular kitchen garbage bag (usually white) is 13 gallons, and a regular big bag (usually black) is 33 gallons. So, what works for you? · If there are only one or two of you in a household a 35 gallon trash can will be plenty big enough. This size container holds 3 full kitchen garbage bags or one big black trash bag. Most couples who recycle regularly report that their trash is about one kitchen garbage bag a week. Unless you have a big event or party, you will find that the smallest container is more than enough space for your trash. · For households with 3-4 residents a 35 gallon trash can should also be big enough, but you will have to become recyclers if you haven`t in the past. As long as you recycle conscientiously you will rarely need to purchase extra bags at City Hall. If you are unwilling to recycle, you will most likely need a 65 gal container. · For households with more than 4 residents your choice will depend on your commitment. If you compost, recycle maximally, avoid purchasing items with a large amount of non-recyclable materials you may still be able to use a 35 gallon trash can but most likely you will have to choice a 65 gallon container. If you are not interested in recycling, you will most likely need to pay more and get the largest size (96 gal) |
