18-Year Old Arrested in Shooting Incident

An 18-year old male from the Rosewood area was arrested Tuesday, following an investigation into an incident Sunday in which a Rosewood area youth was shot.

Waylan John Campbell

Waylan John Campbell was arrested by Sheriff`s Detective Roger Bell for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, culpable negligence and making a false report to law enforcement. He is a convicted felon for grand theft and is currently on felony probation.

Campbell told detectives that he and Gary McIntyre, 16, were at Shiloh Cemetery Sunday and that he was looking at his sound system when he heard a shot. He said he looked at McIntyre, who was bleeding from his mouth. Numerous deputies and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers searched the area around the cemetery, believing there was an active shooter in the area.

Later in the investigation, Campbell confessed he had falsified the story.

According to the investigation by the Levy County Sheriff`s Office, on Sunday morning about 11 AM, McIntyre was at Campbell`s residence at 6551 SW 132 Ave, Cedar Key, when Campbell showed him a 30-30 rifle. Taking target practice, Campbell shot at a bucket behind his residence, then the two went inside and ate lunch.

They then went to a bedroom, where Campbell showed McIntyre a .22 revolver. Campbell said he had checked the cylinders of the gun the day before and believe they were unloaded. He stated he spun the cylinders and cocked the hammer back and dry fired the weapon two times. Unknown to Campbell, there were three live rounds in the pistol. He stated to investigators he pointed the gun at McIntyre`s face and pulled the trigger, and one round struck the victim in the face.

Campbell said he knew he would go to prison for the shooting, and he waited about five minutes before calling 9-1-1 and making up a story for the 9-1-1 operator. After the response by emergency personnel, McIntyre was airlifted to a Gainesville hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition at the time of the sheriff`s office report.
