Plane in Mud at Cedar Key Airport

Plane in Mud at Cedar Key Airport

Piper 140 propped up at Cedar Key Airport awaiting repairs to landing gear and engine cowling.

A single engine plane crashed at the Cedar Key Airport just prior to Noon May 23. A pilot eyewitness described the crash as a result of coming in too high and too fast. Having approached the airport from the east, the plane ran off the west end of the runway and stopped in the mud of the Gulf of Mexico. Although relatively little damage to the Piper 140 occured, the front lading gear and the engine cowling were damaged. An FAA inspector concluded that the plane could be flown out after the damage has been repaired according to a local official who had spoken to the FAA inspector. FAA records show that Thomas J. Knarski of Mango, FL is the owner of the aircraft. Mr. Knarski is said to have been the pilot at the time of the crash.
