Incumbent Scott Dennison prevailed over challenger Ricky Cooke in the runoff election for a seat on the Cedar Key City Commission. The runoff, held Tuesday, May 25, broke a tie in the election that occurred three weeks earlier. In the original election, after 36 absentee ballots were counted, each candidate received 146 votes. The runoff election resulted in new yard signs, an increase to 112 absentee ballots cast and a telephone blitz. Absentee ballots decided the runoff election. Dennison drew 62 absentee votes as opposed to Cooke`s 50. Prior to tabulation of the 112 absentee ballots, Dennison led with 125 votes to Cooke`s 116. The absentee ballots extended Dennison`s lead of nine votes to 21 votes, for a final tally of Dennison 187 to Cooke 166. A 21 percent increase in the votes cast in the runoff as opposed to the first election demonstrates the interest taken by voters following the earlier results. That despite the absence of the race for a seat on the Water and Sewer District board. |
