A contentious debate over proposed locations for Cedar Key`s Fourth of July fireworks set-up site exploded at a special Commission meeting June 1. The set-up site near the Airport used in 2009 is private property, whose owner requires that the City purchase $1,000,000 of liability insurance, at a cost of $1500 to protect her interests. An alternative site, Cemetery Point Park, would be covered by an existing insurance policy, thereby saving $1500.

The debate was complicated by conflicting view among Chamber of Commerce members, and a $3000 insurance cost tied to the 2010 coverage. Opinions varied regarding viewing sites. Disputed claims of objections from neighbors of the set-up sites added to the heat. The use of large fireworks require a 420 foot set-back to protect viewers and private property. Crowd control and allegations of drunken behavior were issues cited by both sides in support of favored sites.

Andrea Dennison spoke passionately for selection of the Airport site. She volunteered $500 toward the cost of insurance for that site. Several Chamber of Commerce members spoke for and against the Airport site. Eventually Mayor Sue Colson suggested that the 2011 fireworks responsibilities could be given to the Chamber of Commerce for administration. Note that the Cedar Key Fire Department traditionally carries out the mechanics of the display.

A member of the Fire Department in the audience said that crowd control is not an issue with either site. He added that the Department is neither for or against either site, but that he had heard erroneous statements made during the discussion.

The Commission voted to pay the balance of insurance costs beyond the contributions made by private citizens. The City has contributed $5000 toward the cost of fireworks. An Additional $7000 has been contributed by businesses and individuals. The fireworks display is scheduled for Sunday evening, July 4.
