City Wins $250,000 Energy Grant | City Wins $250,000 Energy GrantJim Hoy Cedar Key Pathways to Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, that is the title of a grant request that successfully brings $250,000 to Cedar Key. On the technical side, 26,695 billion Btuá€TMs will be saved each year by spending the grant money, which is matched by $50,000 of Cedar Key Community Redevelopment funds. Financial savings of more than half the amount of the grant are expected after the projects under the grant are in place. Of 98 rated applications for funding, Cedar Key came in fifth, thus guaranteeing funding. Cedar Key will use the money to convert solar energy to electricity, lower energy consumption and improve working conditions (lighting and cooling) in City Hall. In addition to City Hall, solar energy panels will be added to the Community Center, energy efficient widows will be installed in the Cedar Key Library and improvements will be made at the Cresswell House. A special feature of the grant is a $30,000 revolving loan fund for small businesses that want to install energy efficient coolers, etc. Better equipment saves energy and also saves the businesses money on electricity bills. A small part of the grant will fund energy education for the public. In keeping with the requirements of the federal economic stimulus money, all equipment purchased must be made in America. CRA Director Greg Lang told Cedar Key News that this grant will help the City save money for years to come. |
