Toastmasters Club Receives Charter

Toastmasters Club Receives Charter

By Jean Rigg

Levy County aquired its first Toastmasters club recently, when the Cedar Key organization received its official charter July 18. Cedar Key Toastmasters attendance soared to 30, augmented in part by Toastmasters International`s District 84 (northern and central Florida) leadership, visiting from out of town, but also by a large contingent of Cedar Key Lions and other local supporters of the young club.

Traveling to Cedar Key for the afternoon meeting were District Governor Scott Hoehn, District Lt. Governor for Education and Training Jim Miller, and District Public Relations Officer Nancy Hoehn.

In addition to a charter recognizing Cedar Key`s Toastmasters as the first such club in Levy County, District Governor Hoehn brought with him a certificate of appreciation recognizing Caely Hibbits` service to the Gavel Club (for members under 18 years of age); Cedar Key Toastmasters charter membership certificates for Josh Wilson, Marci Wilcox, Keith Jenigan, Judy Duvall, Kenneth Young, Jim Wilcox, Jim Green, Cynthia Jackson, and Bruce Wilson; and Toastmasters International certificates of appreciation for the Capital City Bank, Drummond Community Bank, the City of Cedar Key, the Cedar Key Lions Club, Molly Jubitz, Walton McJordan, and Paul Oliver.

Typically, a Toastmasters Club meeting ends with some reflection and evaluation of the meeting. On Sunday, Jim Green reflected too on "the fun of establishing this club in Cedar Key. There were times when we had meetings, and it was just Caely and me." Caely interjected, "This is the most people I`ve ever seen."

"Mr. Green was very persistent," recalled Cynthia Jackson, whose son Patrick is a Gavel Club member.

Cedar Key`s Toastmasters and Gavel Club meet the first and third Sunday of each month, at 4 p.m. upstairs at the Cedar Key Library. Next month`s meetings will be on August 1 and August 15.
