New Law Increases Coastal Barrier Land in Levy County

New Law Increases Coastal Barrier Land in Levy County

Press Release

PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNS BROWN-WAITE`S BILL

WASHINGTON-A bill introduced by U.S. Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite was sent to the White House and signed into law last week. The bill, H.R. 3056, replaces an outdated and inaccurate map that wrongfully excluded property in Cedar Key from being designated as environmentally sensitive.

Brown-Waite`s bill, now U.S. Public Law #108-380, redraws the maps of the Coastal Barrier Relief Act to include additional certified environmentally sensitive lands. The original maps used technology available at the time and were drawn inaccurately. Using new capabilities, such as digital technology, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services has realized they made incorrect determinations for three families in Cedar Key, Levy County. Brown-Waite authored H.R. 3056 in response to this inequity.

People may buy or build on any of the land in or outside the maps. However, only those living in the designated sensitive areas inside the maps qualify for federal assistance - most importantly, Federal Flood Insurance.

"Regardless of how big or small a problem is, I will work to find a solution," Brown-Waite commented. "I`m happy to provide my constituents with the Federal assistance they deserve."

The bill is the third written by Brown-Waite that has passed the House, Senate and ultimately become Public Law during the Congresswoman`s first term in Congress.
