Mark Your Calendars for the Storybook Character Parade

The elementary is having a Storybook Character Parade on November 14. We are doing the event a little differently this year. We will meet in the auditorium at 8:30 a.m. The whole class will come up and either the teacher or the student will name their character and the title of the book.

We will then march around the field on campus. Then Pe-K - 2nd will go in for a story by Jenny Rodgers from the Levy County Public Library Youth Services. Third - Fifth will come in after that. The community is invited to both the parade in the auditorium and also around the field. Visitors need to sign in at the front office.

We are also asking community members to come in and either tell or read a story to individual classrooms and also explain how important reading is to them in either their job or recreationally.

8th Grader Reads All 15 Sunshine State Readers

By Claire Brown

Tiffany Loock, an 8th grader at Cedar Key School has finished all 15 Sunshine State Reader books. Each year the state chooses 15 books to be the "Sunshine State Readers" for 6th through 8th grades.

The chosen books this year included, Shakespeare`s Secret by Elise Broach, Whisper in the Dark by Joseph Bruchac, Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, The
Sacrifice by Kathleen Benner Duble, Kimchi & Calamari by Rose Kent, Black Duck by Janet Taylor Lisle, Rules by Cynthia Lord, Jeremy Fink & the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass, Out Of Patience by Brian Meehl, The Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson, Hurt Go Happy by Ginny Rorby, Peak by Roland Smith, Eggs by Jerry Spinelli, Adam Canfield of the Slash by Michael Winerip, and The Extraordinary
Adventures of Alfred Kropp by Rick Yancey. The Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings was Tiffany`s favorite. Ms. Carmen Doyle, Tiffany`s Read 180 coach comments, "When you have a collection of 15 books to read, you aren`t going to like all of them. It takes a dedicated person to read them all, and pass the tests."

Tiffany will receive a gift card to spend at the CKS book fair. Each student that reads 12 sunshine state readers will get to go on a trip to Gainesville in March. They will go out to eat and to purchase books at Barnes
and Noble. Tiffany will receive extra money to spend at Barnes and Noble for reading all fifteen books first.

Tiffany Loock holds her favorite of the 15 Sunshine State Readers she finished.

Drug Free and College Bound

By Sarah Martin

Four Medical students visited our school Friday, the 31st to teach our middle school students about the dangers of drugs and their future college plans.

In the drug portion, the medical students stayed in Mr. Voyle`s classroom and taught each group of students that rotated into his science class. They were taught about the danger of drugs and how that could prevent them from having the future they want.

After middle school had their lunch, they all met up in the auditorium with the medical students and asked them all kinds of questions about college like "How many years do you have to go to medical school to become a doctor?" and
"What kind of jobs can you get in the school?".

These medical students will have a rigorous seven years left of medical school before they can become actual doctors. It went without saying that drugs have no place in plans for a successful future.

San Luis Mission Assembly

By Alicia Lambert

The presentation was called "From There to Here: Adventures of a Merchant Mariner." Two ladies did the presentation, which was K-1st at 9:00; 2nd,3rd & 4th at 10:00; and 5th grade at 12:30. Ms. Pam Alexander organized the presentation on October 22, for Kindergarten through 5th grade.

The grades learned about navigation, international trading, the economy, and so much more. Kindergarten through fourth grade made deer masks, of which
looked very Indian-like and unique. Fifth grade did things quite differently. They wrote with turkey quills as pens. The ladies that did the presentation brought in spice samples for the students to smell, such as cinnamon, cloves, ground mustard, and several others. They also brought in replicas of the old pottery. Ms. Pam says "All the kids enjoyed it! It was a really neat presentation!"

A special thanks to the Harbor Master for donating a room to the two ladies, so they would have the time for all three presentations.
