By Dylan Webster

Sarah Martin, eighth grade and 4th grade's Sydney Parks are this year's spelling bee winners, chosen through classroom competition. The district spelling bee will be held on Jan. 9th, in the Board room at the County Office in Bronson.

Middle School Christmas Party
By Claire Brown

Cedar Key Middle School had their annual Christmas party last Wednesday, December 17th. The students and teachers kicked off the event with a "Homeroom Gift Opening Game". In Ms. Kim's class the students made Christmas cookies and played games; in Mr. Voyles room the students made "candy cane cups" and decorated; and in Ms. BJ's class they created bookmarks that they could give as a gift. Instead of going to the cafeteria for lunch the students enjoyed pizza in their homeroom classes.

Study Party!
By Jessi Robinson

An exam party for all of the CKS High School students was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Whitman in Mrs. Whitman's classroom. All of the freshmen through senior classes were invited to come eat hotdogs and receive help from the Whitmans, as well as other teachers, for the exams this past week. The goal of this two and a half hour study session was to make sure that the students were as prepared as possible when it came time to sit down and work their hardest on the first semester exams.

Every year, exams are a big part of the students' high school careers, so when the time comes and they have a chance to study, it's obvious that both parents and teachers alike want them to jump at the chance.
This year, Mr. Whitman also held his own study party at the Marine Science lab on Monday, December 15th, which included the kids each bringing in a dish of seafood, such as shrimp, calamari, catfish and mullet; as well as hushpuppies, baked beans, cheese grits, chocolate cake and chicken lasagna while, studying and receiving help from Mr. Whitman. Both parties were sponsored by CKS' Senior Beta and Marine Science Clubs. Junior Aaron Esposito said, "I enjoyed going to the study party because it helped me know what I needed to study for our exams."

Moon Phases and Oreos
By Laia Gore

The students in Mr. Voyles's 7th grade science class are finding ways to make learning a little more fun with milk's favorite cookie. The class is learning about the sun, moon, and earth. To learn about the phases, Mr. Voyles decided to purchase some Oreos for "experimentation". Here's why. When you pop open an Oreo, you see a thin circle of creamy filling right? What we did is we took some spoons and scraped some of the icing off to look like the eight moon phases, new moon, full moon, waxing crescent, waning crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, 1st qtr., and 3rd qtr.

And of course we didn't let the cookies go to waste; we gobbled them up and washed them back with a cold glass of cow juice! Everyone knows why we invented milk; so that we would have something to dunk the Oreo in.

Each game sees both teams scoring more and sharpening their defensive game.

A Letter from our Principal

Dear Parent, Guardian, or Volunteer,

We are very fortunate to have parents and community members that are willing to volunteer in our schools. Part of my job is to protect the instructional time for our students and to minimize class interruptions. We would love to have you assist the teachers or visit if you have arranged previously to do so with them. However, as a policy, volunteers are not allowed to volunteer in their own child's classroom on a regular basis. This includes special area rooms, such as art, media center, wheel classes and physical education. You may visit during lunch at any time by signing in at the front office.

If you would like to assist one of the teachers, please contact them ahead of time and ask if there is anything you can do to help. They may choose to give you something to take home or to take to another room, if your child is in their room at the time. Also, the media specialist can always use help in the media center.

Your child's teacher, of course, may ask you to assist with special projects, plays, parties, field trips, etc.

If you wish to talk to the teacher regarding your child's progress, please set up an appointment to do so after school or when the teacher has planning time.

If there is something that needs to be delivered to your child, please leave it at the front desk and we will make sure that they receive it.

If it is your child's birthday, please arrange with the teacher ahead of time if you are planning to bring cake or cupcakes to celebrate in order to avoid interruption of instructional time.

As always, if you have arranged to volunteer or visit, please sign in at the front desk and obtain a visitor's pass.

I hope you understand that there are good reasons for these policies to be in place, including your child's safety and education, and in no way do we wish to discourage you from assisting us. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Susan R. Ice
Principal
