The strength of a community depends on its health, and its health partially depends on an adequate blood supply. LifeSouth Community Blood Centers would like to thank the residents of Levy, Dixie and Gilchrist counties for coming together to show their support by giving blood in the wake of the recent tragedy in Orlando.
LifeSouth declared an emergency need for blood donors, and you answered the call. Donations at the Chiefland Donor Center, 2202 N. Young Boulevard, in the Winn-Dixie shopping center more than doubled last week. When you consider that one blood donation can save up to three lives, it’s easy to see how giving blood can make a significant difference in our community. Every life that is saved is someone’s family member, friend or coworker.
LifeSouth encourages those who gave blood after the tragedy to remember why you donated, and when you’re eligible, to please come back and give again. Blood needs to be available at the hospital before an emergency occurs. For more information about eligibility, donors may call 888-795-2707.
LifeSouth is the sole blood supplier for 39 medical facilities in 17 counties in North Central Florida including UF Health Shands, the VA Medical Center, and North Florida Regional Medical Center. LifeSouth is a nonprofit, volunteer blood center supplying 128 medical centers in Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
