The Cedar Key City Commission met Tuesday evening, February 20, 2024, at 5 pm at the new City Hall, now located in the renovated City Community Center at 609 Sixth Street. In attendance were current Mayor Sue Colson, Vice-Mayor Nancy Sera, and Commissioner Jim Wortham. This meeting was attended by some forty audience members.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Chamber of Commerce President Doug Lindhout requested that the city intervene in the repair of the Dock Street Motel that, he noted, is currently dangerous to passersby. Mayor Colson said that the intervention has begun.
ORDINANCE 554, ANNEXATION
Commissioners unanimously approved Ordinance 554, the annexation of the following property: Teetor Marguerite Pringle of 406 John Woods Road, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 27516, owners of Piney Point Parcels 00437-003-00.
SEACOAST BANK ACCOUNTS
Attorney Norm Fugate suggested the reorganization of the city’s Seacoast Bank accounts to garner higher interest returns. Commissioners approved unanimously.
 
RESOLUTION
A resolution was unanimously approved that amended the Cedar Key Employee Manual to include a Police Department employee being added to the Florida Retirement System.
PUBLIC WORKS FLOATING DOCK
Commissioners approved a $284,732 contract to Live Flyer, Inc. for the replacement of the Marina’s floating dock.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fire Chief / Emergency Operations Director Robert Robinson presented the RFP response from Debris Monitoring and Public Assistance Consulting, which puts in place the same quality debris removal the island experienced after Hurricane Idalia. Commissioners unanimously approved the proposal.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Police Chief Edwin Jenkins presented an officer take home car policy. Commissioners directed Jenkins to refine the car take home policy more specifically. Jenkins will return to the commission with revisions at the next meeting.
CLERK’S OFFICE
BUILDING SERVICES
Commissioners unanimously approved the dismissal of current Building Official Jack Fahey who now resides elsewhere. Commissioners also unanimously approved entering into a contract with JPI as an alternative for a building official, building inspections, plan review, code enforcement and flood compliance services. Commissioners stated they will closely monitor the costs and operation to compare its efficiency to past actions.
MARCH 19 MEETING
As March 19, 2024, is a Presidential Primary Election, with Levy Elections staff and voters occupying City Hall, commissioners decided to move the commission meeting date to March 21.
MINUTES APPROVED
Minutes from the following meetings were approved: Commission Meeting minutes for: September 13, 2023, Tentative Budget Hearing and Solid Waste Assessment September 27, 2023, Final Budget Meeting September 27, 2023, CRA Meeting September 27, 2023, and Commission Meeting September 27, 2023.
COMMISSIONERS CONCERNS/INFORMATION
SHORT TERM RENTALS
Commissioner Jim Wortham will manage an April 2, 2024, transient rental workshop.
OLD CITY HALL
Vice-Mayor Nancy Sera presented a PowerPoint focusing on options for the old City Hall building on Second Street. Options included: build a new structure; sell the lot and building as is; restore building to previous condition; raise the current structure. Ultimately, commissioners agreed to replace the floor with plywood and not allow the building to deteriorate further.
