On July 23 Chief Financial Officer of General Motors Chris Liddell announced plans for GM to buy for $3.5 billion a company called AmeriCredit. AmeriCredit is a sub-prime financial firm that lends money to vehicle buyers that have poor credit. Those buyers will then buy GM cars and trucks. GM is prepared to pay the shareholders of AmeriCredit a premium to capture a firm that will compete with GM`s other lender, formerly known as GMAC, now known as Ally. Ally owes the US people $16 billion for the bailout provided to keep GMAC from going under. GM owes the US people $47 billion for the bailout to keep GM from going under.

Toastmasters Club Receives Charter

Levy County aquired its first Toastmasters club recently, when the Cedar Key organization received its official charter July 18. Cedar Key Toastmasters attendance soared to 30, augmented in part by Toastmasters International`s District 84 (northern and central Florida) leadership, visiting from out of town, but also by a large contingent of Cedar Key Lions and other local supporters of the young club.

Informational Meeting on Oil Spill for the Clam Farming Industry

On Tuesday, July 27, there will be an informational meeting for the clam farming industry on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Representatives from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be available to address several topics. David Heil, Assistant Director of the Division of Aquaculture, will review the agency`s planning and emergency regulatory responses should oil from Louisiana reach Florida`s shellfish harvesting areas. A Division of Marketing representative will introduce a "Florida Gulf Safe" marketing campaign developed to ensure buyers and the public that Florida seafood products are safe and available. The latest reports from the clearinghouse of information will also be provided, as well as how to access this information. The meeting is from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Senator George Kirkpatrick Marine Lab in Cedar Key.
